Aligning Timelines: When Candidates are Searching vs. When Hiring Managers are Hiring

27 Aug 2024

In the ever-evolving landscape of recruitment, timing is everything. At Darwin Hawkins, we've noticed some trends which shed light on the dynamics between when candidates are actively searching for new opportunities and when hiring managers are on the lookout for fresh talent. We recently posted two polls on LinkedIn which asked both parties which time of year they are most likely to search for a new job or hire new employees. We discovered some interesting results which offer valuable insights into the job market's ebb and flow.

Candidates' Job Search Patterns

According to our recent poll, candidates show varying preferences for when they are most likely to search for new job opportunities. The data revealed that nearly half of the candidates (46%) are not tied to any particular time of year when it comes to job hunting. However, there is a noticeable increase in job searches during the summer months (28%), possibly due to the increased flexibility and time available for job seekers during this period. Interestingly, the start of the year (Jan-March), often associated with new beginnings, sees a surprisingly lower percentage (12%) of job seekers on the lookout for new opportunities.

Hiring Managers' Recruitment Timelines

On the flip side, hiring managers seem to have slightly different timelines for when they are most actively seeking new hires.

Like job seekers, a significant portion of hiring managers (40%) do not adhere to a specific timeline when it comes to recruitment. However, the end of the year (Oct-Dec) emerges as a particularly busy time, with 22% of hiring managers actively searching for new talent during this period. We have found that recruitment activities often ramp up towards the end of the year, coinciding with budget renewals and planning for the upcoming year.

The Intersection of Academic Calendars and Recruitment

Interestingly, one of the trends we've consistently observed is the alignment of recruitment activities with the academic calendar. Recruitment begins to ramp up in September and tends to slow down in the summer months. December, in particular, stands out as a peak time. For candidates, this period might represent a time to reassess career goals and prepare for the new year. For hiring managers, it is a crucial time to fill positions before the year-end, ensuring that teams are fully staffed and ready to hit the ground running in January.

Aligning Strategies for Optimal Results

For job seekers, understanding these timelines can be pivotal in strategising job searches. Engaging with potential employers during their peak hiring periods can increase the chances of securing a role that aligns with career aspirations. Similarly, hiring managers can benefit from aligning their recruitment strategies with the times when candidates are most actively searching, particularly during the summer.

Conclusion

The recruitment landscape is dynamic, with both candidates and hiring managers navigating through various timelines that best suit their needs. By understanding and aligning these timelines, both parties can optimise their efforts, leading to more successful placements and better career opportunities.
